Setting — Four miles up beautiful, meandering Onancock Creek is the town of Onancock and its municipal marina. After passing the Bagwell Oil marine fuel tanks on the starboard side, the historic Hopkins Brothers General Store is straight ahead with Onancock Wharf just to the right annotated by a pale gray dockhouse with French-blue trim. Two slips are to the left of the launching ramp and the remainder follow the curving bulkhead back to the small bridge.
Marina Notes — The harbormaster's office is right on the docks and in the back of that building is the more than adequate bathhouse - one shower, three heads each. Plenty of water and lots of sailboats. Sport fish charters and the Capt. Eulice boat to Tangiers berth next door at Hopkins (which does not take transients.) Owned by the Association for the Preservations of Virginia Antiquities, Hopkins is leased to concessionaires who operate the marina & general store. (At press time the Association was seeking a new lessee, so call ahead). Bagwell Oil provides marine fuel with new tanks and a new system.
Notable — It's about 2 blocks to the charming historic village of Onancock, with leafy lanes lined with perfectly maintained Colonial, Queen Anne and late-Victorian houses and beautiful old churches. (A number of those houses are actually B&Bs and most will pick up from the Wharf.) It's all very elegant in a perfect low-key manner. Right up the road from the Wharf is the 1854 Cokesbury Church. Just beyond is the town square with a gazebo, picnic tables, and statues. Across the street from the church, a narrow path to an historic cemetery offers an interesting detour. The village has quite a few restaurants, a '50s-style movie theater, most key services, some provisioning and not-to-be-missed Kerr Place, a 1799 mansion with exhibits depicting the region's history.
