Setting — Right in front of Pell Park, in the heart of gentrified and utterly delightful South Chesapeake City, is the new City Floating Dock, with room for about three vessels. In front of Town Hall, adjacent to the the dock, are four private slips. Perpendicular, in the same basin, will be four new slips.

Marina Notes — *No charge for tie-ups on the Chesapeake City 200 ft. Floating Dock - also no services. Rafting two deep is permitted. Currently dredged to 6.5 feet, it quickly falls off to 2.5 feet; deeper draft vessels need to be on the first bulkhead - the canal end of the float. The four new "Beck's Landing" slips, along 2nd Street, are slated for '06 and will connect to the Chesapeake Inn dockage. Miss Clare, a 42-foot bay dead-rise fishing vessel, docks here and serves as cross-canal water taxi; it also offers tours narrated by local historian Capt. Ralph H. Hazel (885-5088) - Sat & Sun 1 hr. sightseeing, 2 hrs. sunset.

Notable — In this charming village, which has completely reinvented itself over the last decade, there's entertainment on weekends and quiet during the week. On Sundays, from 6-8pm, Pell Park's professional concerts - bluegrass to cajun to rock 'n' roll - attract an enthusiastic crowd. Up the hill, a gate leads to the Inn at the Canal's beautiful garden (from their Chesapeake Room, you can watch your boat!). Pick up a copy of the Walking & Shopping Guide Map for a 10-block guide to the 19thC. buildings and their shops, galleries, restaurants and B&B's -- now on the National Historic Registry. Acclaimed 1780 Bayard House (one of the brick buildings owned and renovated by Allaire DuPont) has 3 dining rooms featuring Euro-Eastern Shore cuisine - wraparound windows make the ever-changing canal a dining companion. The nearby Canal Museum interprets the history of the 14-mile long, 450 feet wide canal begun in 1804.
