Setting — The sleepy little burg of Charlestown has deep historical roots, some fascinating residents and 3 marinas. The first is Charlestown, a fairly large, well-maintained facility with 4 long main piers poking into the river, protected from the chop by a wave attenuator. Each berths about 35 vessels in a mix of open and covered docks. About midway along "C" dock, which is managed by The Wellwood Club across the street, a furnished deck serves as a gathering place.

Marina Notes — Caters to powerboaters. Four sets of docks, many rebuilt since Isabel (including the fuel dock): "A" dock is the 1st covered dock, "B" is open, "C" dock, managed by The Wellwood (287-6666), is half open (to 45-ft.) and "D" is the last covered dock. Small sitting decks are interspersed. Mix of craft includes many classic vessels, some lovingly restored. About 50 live aboard year-round. Nice cinderblock bathhouses adjacent to the ships' store - tile floors, 4 sinks in a Formica vanity, tile shower stalls with glass doors & dressing rooms. Another set, beyond the mechanical building, has a washer & dryer.

Notable — Adjacent is a town park with a big, grassy picnic area, a small, crescent-shaped sand beach, a pavilion and grills. The Wellwood, which has been in owner Larry Metz's family since the early 60's, is a culinary magnet. Originally a hunting and fishing retreat founded by the Union League & Gridiron Clubs, it once hosted famous politicians, including Teddy Roosevelt. Today, it's better known for its seafood (as well as steaks & ribs), delightful garden patio overlooking the docks, and antique-studded dining rooms (Wed-Sun). The Wellwood also manages a banquet room for up to 150, the nearby River Shack, (crab feasts & take out), and three rental cottages. Northeast, across the river, offers many services & eateries - dinghy to the Nauti-Goose to dock 'n' dine.
