Setting — The new New London Municipal Marina is right in the heart of a revitalizing downtown. The first stages are complete - incorporated into the Waterfront Park on the Thames are a new pier, a few floating docks, a mooring field and an attractive boaters' amenities building. The new Waterfront Promenade starts at the railroad bridge and runs the full length of downtown to Union Station - in front of the marina it is sprinkled with picnic tables.
Marina Notes — Designed for transient boaters and visiting tall ships. The granite, marble and stainless steel heads, showers and laundry are in a brand new building - this is not your typical municipal issue. The NL Police's onsite facility should alleviate security concerns. Additional moorings planned for a total of 35. SeaPony, a 149-passenger boat docks at the city pier (behind Union Station) - harbor tours $12/8 or private charter (440-2734). Delta Queen cruise ship docks here, too. Restored 19thC Union Station is a few blocks away. Amtrak to NY City, Providence and Boston. All major ferries are within blocks.
Notable — Home to concerts and festivals throughout the summer. Nearby is the oldest continuously operating custom house in the country: 1883 Robert Mills Custom House (May-Dec, Tue-Sun 1-5pm). Many casual, seafood and ethnic restaurants are closeby along historic Bank Street. For a tour of historic sites, call 447-9202 or catch the trolley at E. O'Neill Drive. (Visitors' Info Center also located here.) A trolley ride away is O'Neill's Monte Cristo Cottage (443-0051) and Eugene O'Neill Theater (443-5378). Fort Trumbull, built in 1839, has hiking trails, a boardwalk, fishing pier, and interactive exhibits (8am 'til sunset, 444-7591). Submarine Force Museum and Nautilus 694-3174 (free) is across the river, north of the I-95 bridge - a long but worthwhile cab ride.
