Setting — Jones Fruit Dock is a little piece of yesterday on the Indian River. The dock faces west in a narrow section of the ICW along Orchid Island, now one of the most exclusive addresses in Florida. This small section remains unspoiled, thanks to Mr. and Mrs. Jones, who once farmed citrus here, loading it themselves to ship north from this very dock. Look for the small white boat house at the end of the dock, and its simple message: OVERNIGHT DOCKAGE.

Marina Notes — The recently renovated dock (pre-Frances/Jeanne) holds four boats and can take yachts up to 135 ft. Dockage at any length costs $10 a night, water included. For $3 more, you can have 15 amps of shore power. There are no heads or showers, but the view of the sunset is breathtaking. Fuel up and get provisions before you come. Mr. Jones' father sold fish to Flagler's railroad crew in 1903, and he himself was a fishing guide for 30 years, all the while managing the annual citrus crop. Sadly, the citrus grove is gone, along with the fruit stand. (H) The dockhouse sustained some minor damage.

Notable — The Jones's say they maintain the dock because they meet interesting people. If you're lucky, the owner/dockmaster, who grew up in the heartwood pine house across the road, will sit in a swing and talk about his life farming along the historic Jungle Trail and fishing in the Indian River. The nearby area is undergoing high-end residential development, but the end of Jones Fruit Dock returns a world almost lost to us. There is little to do here but sit and watch the sky, the river, the birds, the trees. Mr. Jones says his father told him, "Any time man comes in, nature moves out." His family has worked hard to maintain peace with nature. Sharing what they have is a rare gift.
